Lessons Learned

Well it was not a great morning here.

Ethel our rabbit dropped a litter of five babies on the wire of her cage overnight.  She never pulled hair or tried to make a nest. This is the second litter of hers to die this way….so the decision has been made that she will be replaced by a new doe…Ethel the Second… and will find her way on to our dinner table.

I know that sounds harsh but this is the truth of farm life..if  the animal is not productive it cannot stay. If the chickens stop laying they will be soup. Plants that don’t contribute what we need are eliminated.

I wish this Ethel had been a good mama…but she isn’t. We are not raising pets, we want to breed for meat. Fred can make fertilizer by himself for now and we will look for a new doe…who will hopefully breed better.
